First off, here’s the article in today’s Des Moines Register.
It’s about “And Tango Makes Three”, a children’s book about two male penguins that adopt a penguin chick. I haven’t had a chance to read the book, but it apparently “normalizes” homosexuality. The people opposing it in Iowa are a Christian couple and the Iowa Family Policy Center, which is the local version of Focus On Everyone Else’sThe Family.
What’s wrong with normalizing homosexuality? Homosexuality occurs in nature outside humanity. It’s not some freak sin. Just because someone’s Bronze Age sky shadow says it’s evil does not make it so.
These books are challenged not because they are evil, but because they shake those very Bronze Age beliefs, telling children it’s OK to be themselves, and it’s OK to treat other children as equals regardless of differences. That is one thing fundamentalist Christianity cannot stand.
