It’s Here!

LGBTQ Iowans now have the right to marry! In a unanimous ruling, the Iowa Supreme Court upheld the right of gays and lesbians to marry, according to the Des Moines Register. Gay marriage will be legal in 3 weeks, starting April 24th.

As a reminder, the now-celebratory rally will be in front of Parks Library at 5:30 today in Ames, as well as other locations throughout the state.

The fight isn’t over, though. According to the article, there are rumblings from Republicans about a state constitutional amendment, similar to Prop 8 in California. Those of us who care about human rights and dignity need to organize NOW and organize effectively and shoot this thing down.

Their true colors are showing again. I used to be a fundy Christian. I am now an atheist. I can tell you from experience these folks won’t back down. I would not be at all surprised if there weren’t a few acts of homophobic violence from this.

Finally, their “justification” is the Bible. Just like the “justification” for racial segregation back in the 1950’s and 1960’s. It’s time we try reason rather than blind adherence to Bronze Age superstition and myth. And let’s vote these Republican bastards out at the next opportunity (no offense to children born out of wedlock, of course).
